Total solar eclipse

Iceland will be in the path of totality—meaning that the westernmost parts of Iceland will experience a total eclipse, while other parts will experience a partial eclipse, which is also spectacular.

Yes–Iceland hasn’t seen a total eclipse since 1954 and won’t see one again until June 26, 2196. Partial eclipses are more common, but still rare.

The western-most part of Iceland will see the total eclipse. Other parts will experience a partial eclipse.

Special viewing glasses for watching the eclipse, will be included in your admission package.
You can bring your smartphone into the lagoon if you wish to photograph the event, and we recommend using a waterproof casing. You can also just relax and enjoy the moment!

For more information on how to photograph an eclipse, we recommend this guide or this guide. For smartphones, key points include to switch off the flash, avoid zooming in (which lowers the resolution), using burst mode to capture a lot of images, and lock the focus.

The Blue Lagoon will be in the path of totality, which makes it a prime location. You can also head out to Reykjanes Peninsula, and any other nature location on the west coast of Iceland.

According to eclipse2026.is, the Moon's umbral shadow will make a landfall next on August 2, 2027 in Gibraltar, Northern Africa through Egypt and Saudi Arabia. On July 22, 2028, Australia will experience a total solar eclipse.

As an added bonus, the Perseid meteor shower should also peak at the same day, meaning there’s a possibility that we’ll get to see shooting stars. And, since August in Iceland has dark evenings and nights, there’s a slim chance we might get to see the northern lights too.
