Origins
Two thousand meters within the earth, ocean water and freshwater converge in a tectonic realm of searing heat and extreme pressure, creating geothermal seawater. Drawn to the surface through geothermal extraction wells, the water emerges enriched with silica, algae, and minerals—the bioactive elements that endow this unique fluid with its healing, rejuvenating, nourishing abilities.
History
The beneficial powers of geothermal seawater were first discovered in the early 1980s when local residents began to bathe in the serene blue lagoon that had formed in the lava field beside the Svartsengi Geothermal Resource Park. Some people came to the water for pleasure. Others came for healing. But all who came, left with sensations of profound revitalization.
Science
As word of the lagoon’s healing properties spread, the water became the focus of intense scientific research. In 1995, with a wealth of studies confirming geothermal seawater’s remarkable powers, a clinic for the treatment of chronic skin conditions was opened. This was followed by the launch of Blue Lagoon skin care.

Elements
Silica
Silica—composed of silicon and oxygen—is a constituent compound of lava and merges with geothermal seawater in volcanic aquifers deep underground. When the superheated water reaches the surface and cools, silica molecules are set free, becoming the iconic white mud that is one of Blue Lagoon’s hallmarks.
Algae
Blue Lagoon algae is a microorganism that is unique to geothermal seawater. An analysis of the lagoon ecosystem, conducted in 1996, revealed that this potent organism is a completely novel species of blue-green algae. Patented in 2006, Blue Lagoon algae is cultivated and harvested through sustainable methods at our research center.
Mineral salt
Mineral salt and an array of other minerals, found in trace amounts, complete the water’s unique composition and contribute to its astonishing efficacy as a source of healing and rejuvenation.

The water’s iconic color is a result of the way that silica reflects sunlight.

Deep in the earth, the water's temperature is a scorching 240° C. By the time the water reaches the lagoon, it is a warm, luxurious 38° C.
